Day 67 (10.21.10): Wild Dogs!

We were up and around pretty quick this morning. Thanks to the warm night and a constant breeze, the tent was dry when we got up. So we packed up and headed across the street to the store, which was now open, to change clothes.

The store wasn't much of a store, but it had a little bit of everything strewn about. A couple locals were at a table in the back eating some snacks they'd just bought and smoking some cigarettes.

There wasn't much we wanted or needed, so we changed clothes, bought something small, and were on the road relatively close to 9:00. Amazing!

We'd heard there would be a fire tower on the way to Houston that we could go up to the top of, so when we got to the tower we stopped to look around. It was quite a climb to the top, and once we got there we found the lookout part locked off, but the view was amazing!

We're pretty sure if we'd known where to look, we could've seen our destination for the day, but we weren't sure which direction it was. We took some pictures and videos, then descended the many stairs back to our bikes.

When we arrived in Houston, we had our favorite footlong subs at Subway and then were back onto our very hilly route.  One good thing about hills though is that they usually come with a great view!  Here's a particularly pretty view from today, and also a shout out to some of our supporters: Zach and Carleen Lesser!  Thanks a bunch guys!  Zach and Carleen are my sister and brother-in-law, and they got married the day before we started our trip.  Look at our post from 10-14-10 to see wedding pictures and a video of Zach doing the Chicken Dance!  🙂

The hills today were pretty large and steep and tiring. I managed to ride up all of the hills, but April had to walk a few. Tomorrow is supposed to be even harder, so I'm thinking I'll probably be walking before long too! It's hard getting our 70 pound bikes up these hills!

Dogs are becoming a regular part of life. At one point today, we even came across a pack of wild dogs! How do we deal with dogs you ask? Well we stop, point at the dog, and say, "NO!".  We learned to do this from a couple of other touring cyclist when we stayed at their house a while back. Amazingly, all the dogs, even the wild dogs, have stopped when we stop! Then we can usually just get back on our bikes and ride away.

The weather was pretty good and the scenery was gorgeous and before long we were in the town of Eminence. We consulted the map and learned our next town was 13 miles away and there were LOTS of BIG hills between us and it.

Here's another video of a really pretty view from our ride today!

I was feeling pretty wiped out and the thought of more hills wasn't very exciting. Plus it was a little after 4:30 and I wasn't sure we'd make it to the next town before dark with all the hills, so we decided to find a place to stay in Eminence.

The church we found caused us to backtrack a couple of miles and a few hills to West Eminence, but it ended up being worth it. When we arrived at the Church of Christ, the receptionist showed us a building behind the church and said it used to be used for a camp, but the camp out-grew the facility and now it wasn't used much and we were welcome to use it. It had bathrooms and a kitchen and a nice big room to sleep in. It was a good thing too, because the church didn't have any flat land to pitch our tent on!

I made dinner while April worked on the blog. I even made her a special cup to have her coffee in.

Even though we ended up going fewer miles than we originally planned, it was nice to end early and have a truly relaxing evening. And it will be nice to sleep inside. Sweet dreams!
